MEET JANELLY: A GIRL IN SEARCH OF WATER

5-year-old, Janely lives in the rural community of Montaña de la Olla, part of the Dry Corridor of Nicaragua. Every day, little Janely walks up to 3 hours with her grandmother to fetch water—the arduous task sometimes forces her to miss school.

“The bucket of water is heavy... I get tired on the way,” comments Janely.

The rocky road that leads to the well is very steep, but Janely keeps a fast phase. With the little water they collect, Janely’s grandmother decides whether to bathe, wash clothes, or cook.

When asked about the taste of the water, Janely answers:

“It makes my belly hurt.”

Thousands of children in the Dry Corridor of Nicaragua are at risk. For girls like Janely, clean water means health and more time in school.
