INCREASING MEDICAL ATTENTION IN SOMOTO

The Julio Velasquez Planned Community holds shelter for the 160 families who live here since October 2019. Located 200 kms from Nicaragua’s capital and surrounded by the amazing view of the region’s mountains and valleys, this community is a dream project for ANF, Food For The Poor - our lifetime partner, and every organization involved.

Since 2019 and up to date 102 families have been benefitted with a dignified home. A community center has been built, and a water system has been installed to ensure safe drinking water for the entire community.

To improve the community’s development and alleviate the medical demand in Somoto’s health center, The construction of a health center inside the Julio Velasquez community finished in August of this year.

This health center will directly benefit 160 families and approximately 720 people from Julio Velasquez, these residents usually visit Somoto’s health center which is located 1.6 kms from the community in seek of medical attention. The health center will also provide medical response to 4 more neighboring communities.

“With the health center’s infrastructure, equipment, and medical team (nurse, nursing assistance, and doctor) we will be improving primary care services and decongest Somoto’s health system for residents and families not only from the Julio Velasquez community, but also from several neighboring communities”.

 - Dr. Rosa María Méndez, ANF’s Health and Nutrition Program Manager

The center will be equipped with the basic medical supplies and equipment to provide comfort and a quality care to patients who visit the health unit. The center also counts with a file admission area, pharmacy, 3 consultation rooms, waiting room, 2 restrooms, laundry, and pantry area.
