A HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

Crisna Melissa is a young mother of two girls – Melissa Raquel and Crisly Nazareth – as a family, they live in Julio Velásquez, Somoto. For Crisna and her family having a home was a gift and a dream come true this year.

¨Now my daughters can play in a house that has a floor. ¨

As a young couple, Crisna and her partner Gonzalo faced difficulties with the birth of their two daughters. With both having informal jobs, their dream to build a house for their daughters seemed almost impossible.

In 2017, they applied to the local government office in Somoto for a plot of land in the Julio Velásquez community. Once they had succeeded, they moved in to live in a tiny house made of plastic, zinc, and cardboard.

For Crisna and Gonzalo this achievement was a great victory, however living in this type of house had its complications due to its location and the climate conditions of the area.

In 2018, during a tropical storm the family had to be evacuated because of their poor housing conditions. Unfortunately, their home did not survive, and they had to rebuild it using the same type of materials.

When ANF and Food For The Poor announced their intervention in Julio Velasquez, Crisna felt motivated and started to attend the different activities and meetings in the community.

Until today, Crisna remains as an active community leader and a hygiene and health promoter. For her, being an active member in her community is important as she feels grateful that thanks to ANF’s and Food For The Poor’s help she could start a new life and development.

Crisna with great faith and hope would pray to God every day for her family and for a new beginning were the cold and the rain would no longer affect them.

On March 18, 2021, Crisna and her family received with great joy the keys to their new home, alongside an Eco stove, beds, mattresses, a dining table, and chairs.

Crisna is grateful for this blessing and all the support she has received, far more than any material donation, she is thankful for her educational training which has allowed her to constantly work on behalf of her community.

¨This year our Christmas will be different, last year we did not have a table where we could sit and share a meal as a family¨.
